For years, I’ve been interested in the world of Radio. I met someone years ago by the name of Nes Rodriguez. I was ten years old and at that time was living in Seattle Washington. At that time, we had an AM station that was named KFox. The frequency was 1250. I had been born with the gift of music but this was even stronger. I kept up with Nes for years but over time life gets in the way and you lose touch with the ones you love. This happened and I had no idea if he were still around or if he had passed away. I of course know that he was helping a local rap artist known to Seattle as Sir Mix-a-lot. Mix and Nes start a record company named Nasty Mix records. That company folded in 1991. I still kept up with Mix’s music from 1988 until 2003 on all of his albums and singles. I have even found some stuff by him on Youtube I didn’t even have. Anyway, back to Nes. When I was ten years old I got a chance to speak to Nes at the remote live broadcast he was doing and also listened to a show called Fresh tracks. At that time, KFox was not in the habit of playing HipHop. Just R&B. But Nes wanted to get HipHop noticed. Mix had done a few themes for his show Fresh Tracks. Then Kfox closed it’s doors in 1993 and he went to work for Kube Fm. By that time I was in Kansas city Kansas and also at that time we had no internet so I had no idea what had happened to him. Fast forward to several years later. I stumbled on a website called rap attack live. This was his personal website. I sent an email wondering if this was his website. To my amazment he responded and said it was indeed him. I nearly screamed out loud because everything had come back around. I was devoted to Kfox from 1986 until 1992. One year before it signed off. In 1993, I had visited my first station Kprs hot 103.3 FM and got introduced to Tony Greg. Also known as Tony G. I never applied for a job there because I was still in high school at the time. I was sixteen at that time. The next station I visited was 98.9 The Rock Kqrc. I got a chance to meet Johnny Dare and Murphy wells. I have been to one rock fest of there’s and back then to them I was known as Blind Duyahn. I didn’t mind it though. I had lots of calls from the audience and one person who was blind because he lost his sight because of something trigic. I will tell you something. Treasure what you have. You can never tell what you have until it’s gone. Back to Nes. After that email, we exchanged phone numbers. He said he was getting back on the radio. He emailed me out of the blue and asked me if I could do some station ID’s with my talk box like California from 2Pac, Dr. Dre, and Roger Troutman. I of course sent him what he needed. I also sent him some other ID’s. I even did something that was a take off of Sir Mix-a-lot’s song Electro scratch. Nes sadly passed away from medical issues last years before his birthday and I felt I was a part of his family. I still feel that way to this very day. The station he broadcasted on was called Raineer avenue radio and they still rerun his episodes that he recorded. When I look at his pictures that I have hung up in my house, I get teers because he was a very big brother to me and he saw a post on Facebook that he was very concerned about so he gave me a call and we spoke for about two hours.
I will never forget that conversation either. I have been broadcasting for over twenty-three years now and it’s all thanks to the glory of God and Nes. God put me in Nes’s life and I will never forget how I got started. On z103.com near the month of April this year, I did an entire show dedicated to his memory and at the end it hurt because I nearly cried. He meant so much to me. I know he meant so much to others as well such as his wife and family.
